Addiction/Substance Abuse

I am curious about what others are doing in their employees' substance abuse/addiction space.

We have rolled out an EAP, had a national speaker come in at our last all-company meeting, and had an employee testimony.

We are trying to think outside the box on additional resources/items we should consider.

Thanks - Bryan

  • Hey Bryan, I’m a substance abuse counselor who (and until this year) a regular attendee at the Roundtable.   I’d love to have a conversation with you about this.  I posted a month ago here the importance of reaching family members who are also stressed by their loved one’s alcohol and drug use and the stigma they feel.  Family members are employed and overwhelmed.  I’ve given talks about how family members can be empowered by learning communication skills to actually invite loved ones to change.  This is an evidenced based approach significantly different than the Al Anon model.

I have lots of ideas on how to address the person drinking or abusing drugs. First I’d like to know what your national speaker addressed. Feel free to reach out by text/phone at 513-666-1413 or mark@mindsatpeace.net. My website has more information: mindsatpeace.net

So glad you brought this up!!

  • Hi Bryan! Check out Recovery Ohio... we utilized them to get a free drug disposal bag for every employee and used some of their campaign graphics on the slides that play at the elevators and lobby for employees. Other things that we did were add a section on our intranet with substance use resources (phrasing guide, treatment centers, drugfree workplace policy, etc.), add needle disposals in our restrooms, and held a narcan training session where all employees were given narcan at the end. You could also consider becoming a certified recovery-friendly workplace.
