Recruiting "good people" to run restaurants

Hi all,

I just took a new position where I will be responsible for finding people who want to run a restaurant. The company is looking for "good people" with caring hearts who don't necessarily have to have any restaurant experience. They're growing rapidly in areas they haven't been before, so I have to find a lot of people quickly. Any suggestions for how to find people like that?

    Hi Tara!

Finding good people fast can be challenging in almost any industry!  For starters, you may want to try the local unemployment offices in your area, many of them have partnered with firms that will help source applicants for a nominal cost, if not free!  Avoid Craig's List.

You can also try what I l like to call "gentle poaching" while you're out and about running errands or shopping for groceries. There's nothing wrong with giving out your business cards to someone that exudes exemplary customer services skills, a restaurant's "must have" quality.  This happens more often than you think.

Another good resource is the local HR association, they may have a pool of recruiting professionals that may be able to offer assistance and know of people who are "in transition" that may need to find suitable employment.

Try posting your vacant positions in LinkedIn groups or making connections with hospitality HR groups, they may also know of interested individuals or can assist with getting the word out that there are openings and where to apply!

Local colleges and universities may offer a wide applicant pool, especially if the establishment has lengthy hours of operation, many restaurants employee college students and many of them are in between jobs or employed for the first time (so they're moldable).

    Good luck!
