Holiday for 4-Day Work Week?

How do you handle the following situation?

You have a FT, exempt level employee who works a 4-day work week (M-Th). There are a few company-observed holidays this year that fall on a Friday. I believe it's up to the company policy as to how they want to treat this, but the employee is asking if she then can take a "floating holiday" at another time since the rest of the company has that Friday off.

Two questions:

- Any legal requirements this company has to give her this day at another time?

- If not, what are other employers doing in similar situations? Are you giving the employee an extra day off or not?

Thank you in advance!

  • We pay people holiday pay only for hours normally worked. There is no issue of "making the person whole."  They are not being docked, so you can do what you want.  If you want to give them a floating holiday, it's your choice but there's no conflict with FLSA to not give them holiday pay.
