Staying Current on Regulatory Changes as a Multi-State Employer

(This came to me from a CHRO of a multi-state employer - Steve)

For those who are multi-state employers, how do you track and keep up with all the ever-changing laws in every State?

Our company has locations in 23 States. We have some resources we've tried, but many of them either lag or put us up against deadlines we weren't aware of.

Can you please recommend resources that you use that could help me and my team stay current?

Any recommendations you could share would be appreciated.

We are also fairly new to multiple states (thanks COVID!...but truly a good thing).  If you are not already a member of SHRM, I highly recommend it.  I think I subscribe to every newsletter they offer, which means I get no less than one email a day (sometimes getting the same info in multiple emails), but it has been helpful.   They also have an interactive tool where you can compare regulations state-to-state.  We use that a lot.

I also recommend connecting with local/state SHRM chapters as well.

We also get very helpful information from our benefits partner/broker, which is HUB International.  Possibly your broker has similar newsletters/updates.

We have employees in multiple states, as well. I was also a consultant during my career with employees located throughout all 50 states and internationally. There were multiple resources used and I found that one of the best ways to stay on top of various changes was to enroll in legal alerts through SHRM. They offer state-by-state legal guides, toolkits, and regular legislative updates for members delivered to your email inbox.

I create a compliance calendar at the start of each year and update it along the way when changes are effective with a state reference, if not applicable in all our locations.

Good luck and hope you find something that works well for your company.
