Substitute for HRIS - Any recommendations?

Good day HR Professionals!

I need your help on something. I work in a start-up consulting firm and I was recently made the HR Administrative Assistant. I want to begin to manage the employee records and database on the computer. Currently, we don't make use of HRIS. All employee  information is paper-based.

I just feel this is really traditional and I want to suggest a change to my boss. What other substitutes are there for HRIS? I want something affordable (at least for a start). Can I make use of Microsoft Excel?
