PTO use during Mandatory OT

I would like to hear from anyone in a manufacturing environment with hourly employees, how do you handle PTO/or sick/vacation usage when employees are scheduled to work mandatory overtime? For example, an employee calls in on a day they are scheduled to work 11 hours.  Is 8 hours of PTO deducted, or are they required to use 11 hours of PTO?  Same question applies for partial day absences, when they are scheduled to work 10-12 hour days?  Our policy does not specifically state how PTO will be used during times of scheduled overtime.  Any insight on how others handle is appreciated!

  • I only ask employees to use 8 or 4 hours of PTO for a full or half day off, even during mandatory OT.

  • Like Bonita, we also only use 8 or 4 hours for either scenario, even during mandatory OT.

  • Same here, we would only change that if we went to a different permanent schedule, if they regularly worked four 10 hours days as their schedule, then we would deduct 10, but as long as their normal schedule is five 8's, we wouldn't take more than 8 hours of vacation even if it was a mandatory overtime of 10 or 12 hours that they were expected to work that day.
