Trailing spouse programs

Good morning HR Netters,

I'm in charge of recruiting structural engineers at Schaefer, in downtown Cincinnati. We have a couple engineers who are leaving this summer due to their spouses’ residency placement elsewhere.

It got me thinking, what are some options for trailing spouses to network around Cincinnati? So far I have talked with the Chamber and with Shirley at Huff Realty who recommended the Job Search Focus Group. Is there anyone else you'd recommend?

Thanks! - Lauren

  • I would recommend the HR Roundtable, GETDOT and Chamber Events.  All great places for individuals in transition.   Another option is to build a network of HR and Recruiting professionals yourself and push/market resumes out to your network for trailing spouses.  One additional thought, you could reach out to an Outplacement group like Promark and see if they have special programs for these situations, a small investment in an employees spouse is a great way to demonstrate culture and values to your new hire.

    Hope these thoughts help!

  • A robust relo company would help with the trailing spouse. Comey and Shephard offers it, Julie Pogue is a point of contact. Other option is work with a job search company, there are packages you can buy at LHH. John Farrell is a good point of contact.

  • We are a local, full service relocation management company. From an industry perspective, many employers offer benefits to the trailing spouse, such as job coaching/placement and introduction to social opportunities. HELLOCincy from the Chamber is a good resource for the latter.

Thanks very much to those who replied, if you do come across a trailing spouse looking for a structural engineer position I am seeking them year round so send them my way.

  • In Northern Kentucky there is the Northern Kentucky Accountability Group that meets on Wednesday mornings at the Erlanger branch of the Kenton County Library. Natalie Ruppert is the facilitator and does an excellent job of helping people in transition. The Kentucky Career Center on Madison is also a good resource. Both of these organizations will assist with resume building; mock interviews; and networking.
