Shift Differential Recommendations

Hi, looking for best practices for setting up a shift differential for our 24/7 employees.  I've done it in the past for certain shifts (2nd or 3rd) as well as weekends.  Is there a standard on this?

Also, is there a best practice on the amount of additional pay to add?  Is it more common to be a flat % or a flat $/hr?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Hi Debbie. I have worked in manufacturing for several years at several companies of different sizes and all have had $1/hr shift differential for hourly associates working an off shift.

  • Hi Debbie,

In the Midwest at my organization we use $1.50 shift diff for 2nd shift and $2.00/hour additional for 3rd shift.

I don't think there is a policy on this it is based on company policy.  We only give differential of $1 for 3rd shift.  We are also a 24/7 company and most of our applicants are looking for 2nd shift.  1st and 3rd are sometimes the hardest to find.
