Benefits in Australia

My company is looking to start a division in Australia and I've been tasked with some background HR research. What are the top benefits employers offer in Australia or what benefits should be offered for a competitive employment offer? If it makes a difference, we will only have about five employees there for the first few years.

If you have any other tips for HR going into Australia I'd be more than happy to listen!

Thank you,

Rebecca

  • Hi Rebecca! I'd love to help (I'm based in Australia)

There are obviously your legislated entitlements (9.5% super,  4 weeks annual leave, 10 days sick). Then the additional benefits are very dependent on your location and industry.

For example - a car leasing option is much more favorable in Brisbane the Next Sydney (because no one drives in Sydney!)

General speaking, Aussies are really in to flexible work arrangements, and are starting to look more into additional leave (i.e. Unlimited leave policies). Health insurance coverage is also starting to get more prevalent. There are of course the health and wellbeing benefits - which are more meaningful in the form of an allowance as opposed to a particular membership.

You could also look at retainer bonuses for foundation employees, linked to tenure if you get the right people.

Again, depending on the industry - above and beyond benefits are not necessarily the selling point - particularly for smaller businesses.

Would be more than happy to give you some more info if you wanted to connect further!
