Medicare

Does your company have anything in place for employees that reach Medicare age and transition off your group plan?

  • I'm not sure what the question is.  Are you asking about a process?

Yes.  Once employees reach the age for Medicare they have the option to stay on the group plan or go to Medicare.  It is their choice.  Do you offer any reimbursement if they choose Medicare?  If an employees chooses to stay on the group plan and fall suddenly ill, they may have difficulty getting onto Medicare.  We are just trying to stay ahead of the game before the game starts.  Thanks!

  • Thank you for clarifying, John.  I'll be interested, too, in hearing some of the input you get from others in our forum.  Our company does not compensate anyone for going off of our plan, and that included Medicare-eligible individuals.  I do, of course, send out the required Creditable/Non-Creditable notices prior to their becoming eligible for Medicare so they can make informed decisions about whether they want to go on Medicare or not.     Best regards, Joan.

  • I think you have to be cautious about offering anything to incentivize employees to go on to Medicare.  We have offered seminars with a Medicare broker as more of an education piece.  We're trying to make the point that employees (and their spouses) could save some money by going on Medicare instead of staying on our group plan.  So far we haven't seen much movement of people off our plan.  Lisa

John, Lisa is right.  You cannot provide any incentives to employees to take Medicare.  What we do is educate all employees and provide them access to a Medicare Expert to help them evaluate their options and enroll in Medicare, if they choose. Ted
