Sick Leave Policy Levels

We have a very generous sick leave policy (90 days). Basically it tells that if you are sick stay home. I am looking for a some what generous leave policy but not to that extent. Anybody willing to share their thoughts or policy?

  • Our employees accrue about one day per month (about 4 hours per pay period), so it equals 12 days per year. This seems to be plenty. We allow employees to accrue up to 90 days, but it is because we do not offer short term disability coverage and this is the point that LTD would kick in.

If an employee leaves the company do you pay the accrued sick time out?

We do not. We award 4 days per year for sick time only. We only pay out vacation time if they give us notice!

  • Hi, Shreya. I think that the new state and local sick pay laws are generous. Many are 1 hour accrues for every 30 ours worked, max of 40 hours per yr. SHRM also provided guidance for a federal sick pay law in the April, 2018 HR Magazine.
