Outstanding Payroll Check Issue
I have a former employee who has two outstanding checks for $12 and $581 from the last year. We contact him a few weeks ago about the checks and sent him paperwork to reissue the checks. He passed away unexpectedly before we got the signed paperwork back. I have his wife’s contact info. They were separated but still communicating with each other when I last spoke to the wife (and she has always been very helpful communicating with me when the employee was not). They have a 4 or 5 year old son.
I don’t want to send the money to the state of Ohio for unclaimed funds if I know where the money will go – to the son. And I know that the family could use the money for the former employee’s burial. Has anyone run across this before? What did/would you do?
