The Gig Economy is a hot topic, captivating headlines with trends that are defining the modern labor market. Increasing numbers in the labor force are choosing independent work over traditional employee positions at increasing rates year-over-year. Businesses are also increasingly interested in a “just-in-time” labor process that allows access to specialized labor, as well as, extra headcount when business needs increase.  

A McKinsey report on the Gig Economy makes a very strong argument that the Industrial Revolution moved much of the workforce from self-employment to structured payroll jobs. Now the digital revolution may be creating a shift in the opposite direction, and marketers are right there at the forefront of the trend.
