Virtual Onboarding & Orientation

Hello,

We have been given the task to identify successful ways to onboard and orient our new hires virtually.  Please share any experiences you have had if you have already headed down this path.  We are just starting on our journey so all input is welcome.  We recently moved to PageUp as our ATS.  Hoping to add to that resource, if possible, to lessen confusion and/or barriers for our new hires.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Mary Jane,

We have all new hires fill out new hire paperwork and do safety via online training video. It's an internal video training system that the new hire logs on to and it tracks completion.

  • Mary Jane -

It may depend on the role you are trying to onboard. But, we just onboarding one of our Senior HR Consultants in the midst of COVID-19. I'm happy to share how we handled it with you if that would help. Feel free to contact me at Robin@strategicHRinc.com.

  • Hi Mary Jane,

We're not a large company - 100 employees. We recently onboarded an engineer remotely.  We send his computer, equipment etc. to his house and emailed him a bunch of paperwork ahead of time. On his first day, our onboarding team met with him over Teams - we each took turns to cover our areas - popping in and out of the meeting.  Using OneDrive and other technologies we completed the I-9 and made it through the paperwork.  Much of the follow up compliance training could be completed online.  This process worked well for us and still felt personal for our new employee.  Not our normal routine but it seemed to work ok.

Our process is similar to Linda's - we shipped the computer and a welcome kit with desk supplies ahead of time, we use Paylocity onboarding for completing tax forms, I-9, benefits enrollment online. I laid out a week long schedule of Zoom meetings for the new employee to go over different programs and training with a variety of our current employees, and we assign the new person a mentor to check in with them daily on an ongoing basis while we're remote.
