The role.

This role reports to the P&O Head, US and Americas. The Union/Labor Relations Professional serves as a trusted advisor to managers, supervisors, and labor attorneys and works in close partnership with other P&O Business Partners and Talent Acquisition Consultants in the U.S. This role is responsible for salary and hourly employees across two factories and two repair centers.

The position is in Norwood, Ohio. (Other possible locations are New Kensington, Pennsylvania, or Kansas City, Missouri.) 

In this role, you will deliver consultative P&O services, and a full range of HR expertise aligned to the business strategy for the sites with approximately 400 hourly employees both unionized and non-unionized. You will support management on day-to-day manufacturing activities. 

  • Be a trusted advisor to business leaders, and drive workforce force planning within the organization as aligned with business goals.
  • Coach and develop managers and supervisors at one factory and one service center that are unionized and one factory and one service center that are non-unionized on employee relations topics.
  • Coordinate and assist in contract negotiations, implementation, interpretation, and ongoing administration of the Local Collective Bargaining Agreements, including leading the grievance process under the Local Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Collaborate with Employer Legal Counsel regarding privileged and/or potential high-risk employee relations issues and investigations and assist in preparing responses to Outside Agency Complaints (EEOC & NLRB). This may directly lead to increased or high-risk investigations including EEO, harassment, ADA, etc. Advises management in all areas of HR in compliance with employment and labor laws (wage and hour, FMLA, FLSA, ADA, etc.).
  • Support hourly personnel recruiting and hiring, Employee Relations activities, and Health and Safety as required.
  • Coach, Counsel and Educate salaried operations partners on HR Policies, Processes, programs, and plans.
  • Analyze data to proactively identify and diagnose business needs/ opportunities and develop solutions to meet those needs.
  • Provide analysis and resolution of employee concerns with growing complexity, visibility, and risk related to policy or code violations while collaborating with managers, legal, HR, and other relevant partners. Optimally evaluates all aspects and makes recommendations from a position of neutrality.
  • Proactively identify trends, patterns, and areas of improvement in employee relations, and develop proactive strategies to address and mitigate potential risks.
  • Ensure company policies and collective bargaining agreements are optimally conducted by communicating, training, and monitoring adherence.
  • Partner with managers and legal on discipline, poor performer resolution, and termination decisions.

Your profile.

  • BS Degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Labor Relations, or a related field of study. MS Degree is preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in leading employee and labor relations as they relate to workplace investigations, disciplinary decisions, grievances, conflicts, problem resolutions, and collective bargaining in a unionized factory.
  • Experience working with skilled and unskilled laborers.
  • Must have 1st or 2nd chair union negotiations experience.
  • Shown the ability to prioritize, analyze, problem-solve, and make decisions rapidly and with positive outcomes.
  • Shown the ability to communicate effectively, in both written and oral presentation skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with the talent to adjust style as needed to build solid relationships with all levels of leadership, employees, and peers on-site and virtually.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without the need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization.
  • Up to 25% travel, to union and non-union factories in Kansas City, Missouri, New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and Mentor, Ohio.

Licensure and Certification

SHRM, HRCI, IPMA, or other Human Resources Certifications is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experienced knowledge of employment and labor law.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing union environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, organizational skills, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to run projects, meet deadlines, and tackle emergencies and difficult situations.
  • Negotiation and conflict resolution skills to address issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of handling large amounts of data, maintaining detailed comprehensive records, analyzing and organizing information, having effective project and time management skills, and being well organized.
  • Ability to effectively plan, coordinate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships and prioritize workloads based on available resources.

The pay range for this position is $104,400 - $179,000. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
