How do I look for an HR Mentor?
(This came to me anonymously from an HR practitioner - Steve)
I seriously need a mentor, someone to meet with on a monthly basis. I'm just not sure how to get this established. I'm looking for someone to be a resource for me as a fellow HR practitioner. This isn't about establishing a mentoring program at my company.
I find it challenging to get out from my day-to-day role and workload to connect and find someone willing to do this. I wanted to ask what others are doing that has worked? Do you have a mentor? How did you find one? How does it work?
I really appreciate any ideas or input on this.
I would recommend first joining your local SHRM chapter - you can find yours at https://www.shrm.org/membership/communities/chapters/pages/default.aspx Get active in the chapter. If the chapter has a listserv respond to inquires. Once you find someone you can relate to in your networking ask if they would like grab coffee some morning and get to know them first. Share what you are working on, learn what others are doing, and share your expertise with others. After awhile you will have a solid network of folks you can rely on to pick up the phone or answer your emails when you need it, or give guidance when needed. Best of luck, Bill
