Transitioning employee (transgender)

Requesting advice, feedback, or lessons learned from the HR Community here. We're a small employee (under 100) in a rural/suburban area. We have an employee with gender dysphoria who will be transitioning.

I've been using SHRM and some other online resources, as well as listening to/communicating with the employee to provide support. We're working on a communication plan.

Have any of you been through something similar, any lessons learned that you might share?

Thanks - Aimee

  • Aimee - We have had team members who are transgender and/or transitioning. The key for us is to let those team members know they are welcome, safe and we're here to support them. We look at it as all team members may have needs, concerns and questions. There's nothing that can't be asked about or considered.

When we've hit a bump or two in how others treat each others or if people from outside of our company make comments, we show grace and address things consistently. Each interaction is a chance to learn, coach and train.
