Build your level of empathy – on-demand video education, 4 PDCs

Building Empathy: Online, on-demand video education; 4 PDCs for $39.99

Increasing your level of empathy results in benefits at work and at home, by enhancing relationships & communication, reducing stress and improving health, and strengthening leadership skills.

Building Empathy is an exploration of how our biology – our eyes, ears, brain, and DNA – work to help us make sense of the world; but in the process, this can limit the amount of empathy we can have for one another, without us even realizing it.

Through interesting, relevant, and humorous vignettes and demonstrations, you’ll be taken through the science behind empathy and taught skills to help you develop empathy as an intentional skill. Plus, this program is animated – which helps retain learning with science-based topics, plus is a lot of fun!

This course earns 4 PDCs through SHRM for $39.99.

The program covers:

1.    Overview of Empathy: What is empathy, and why is it helpful to increase your personal level of empathy?

2.    Mocking Your Sight: As your eyes and brain work to make sense of the millions of pieces of data bombarding you at any given moment, information can be lost, resulting in things such as optical illusions and filtering information that can prevent you from “seeing” what is truly there.

3.    The World of Bias: Our DNA was designed to keep us safe in caveman times – but it has not evolved as quickly as the rest of our world has. This means that “bias” is a natural – and unavoidable – part of being human. This section examines 4 different types of bias and how we can identify when it may be affecting us.

4.    Where Are You In Culture? We usually think of “culture” as being our heritage – English, Lithuanian, Korean, etc. But culture is much more than this, and we all exist in multiple cultures. By understanding our own unique culture, we can learn to understand and appreciate others more deeply.

5.    The Ins + Outs of Diversity: Diversity is a necessary part of life – without diversity, our world would wither and die. Diversity in humans also enhances our lives. Building off of the idea of our unique culture, this section examines how we are diverse from every other human on earth, and by recognizing and taking advantage of this diversity, we end up with better results.

6.    The Impact of Our Emotions: Emotional Intelligence, or EI, is a hot topic these days. But this section takes a little different look, examining different Theories of Emotion. It then dives more deeply into one Theory of Emotion, Cognitive Appraisal Theory, or CAT, and how this approach can help you understand, manage, and change your emotional reactions.

7.    Listening for Understanding: Just like our eyes, our ears are great at filtering – which isn’t always great for our relationships! This section examines the obstacles to Active Listening and how we can improve our listening skills to connect more deeply with others.

8.    Pulling It All Together: We’ve all heard of the Golden Rule – but if we truly want to connect with others, we need to take the Golden Rule to its next level.
