Temporary On-Site HR Manager, Tribune Publishing, Chicago, Illinois

The Chicago Tribune, a business unit of Tribune Publishing, is seeking a temporary Human Resources Manager with a proven track record and deep experience working with both non-union and union environments. This role will primarily focus on our business units located at the Freedom Center, our Manufacturing and Distribution facility, located along the Chicago River north of downtown with free (!) parking for employees and easily accessible via public transportation.

Responsibilities

What You Will Do…

  • Acts as a trusted business advisor to understand issues/concerns of line managers and provides structured support in managing talent and performance issues.
  • Investigates employee/labor issues and makes recommendations regarding progressive discipline.
  • Contributes to the business strategy by helping business leaders to identify, prioritize and build organizational capabilities, behaviors, structures and processes.
  • Ensures a strong leadership and coaching culture permeates the organization.
  • Partners with leaders to provide counsel during reorganizations, restructuring, and downsizing workforce efforts when necessary.
  • Develops strategies to source, attract, recruit and select top tier talent
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with hiring managers to create a partnership
  • Effectively coaches hiring managers on the interview and selection process.

Qualifications

Please note: We are anticipating a minimum duration of 3 months for this temporary assignment.

This Could be a Match if You Have…

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources management, labor law, and/or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ plus years of progressive tactical and strategic human resources experience, including employee relations, full lifecycle recruitment / talent acquisition experience, preferably in a fast paced Manufacturing environment.
  • Labor relations experience, including collective bargaining
  • Possesses leadership ability, strong communication and management skills and works well with employees at all levels of the organization. 
  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal employment and labor laws, FMLA, ADA and current employee and labor relations practices is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution, mediation facilitation and the dynamics of problem solving and negotiation.  
  • Ability to handle confidential and politically sensitive matters is required.
  • Solid knowledge of how to leverage various sourcing tools.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to use independent judgment in prioritizing tasks to meet or exceed deadlines in an ambiguous, ever-changing environment.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to identify a steady stream of prospective talent in anticipation of future talent needs.
  • Systems savvy; strong knowledge of applicant tracking systems (iCIMS a plus), MS Office Products and HRIS Systems (Workday preferred).
