Employment Practices Liability Insurance

(This question came to me from Kari Fentress a fellow HR practitioner. - Steve)

Could anyone provide their thoughts on Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) and whether they feel it would be beneficial for small companies with approximately 75 employees? Also, I'd love to get any feedback on a combined EPL with Wage & Hour Insurance policy?

  • I have spent the majority of my HR career in outsourcing and I've seen EPLI used more than once by a small business owner who simply didn't know what they were doing in an employee situation.  I think it is particularly important for those who don't consult with anyone for HR advice and/or who do not have anyone on staff dedicated to HR.  I am not familiar with Wage & Hour insurance but a broker should be able to speak to options.
