Document Retention

Can anyone recommend where I can find the rules/regulations on retaining hard copies of employee payroll documents? We're also wondering about Unemployment Claim paperwork.

We are cleaning out our archives.  We want to determine if OK to scan/shred or scan/keep original documentation.

Thanks - Dorothy

  • Dorothy- on the SHRM website is a chart showing a lot of retention requirements and according to the chart it would be 3 years. Hope this helps!

Retention regulations for different document types vary by industry, jurisdiction and document type. Our information governance team at Access (Montana & Associates) can counsel you on retention policies. We can also scan, store, shred and help you digitize your HR documents into CartaHR where retention and destruction can be automated (among other really cool time-saving functionality).
