Senior Director - People

Summary/Objective 

Lead the development and improvement of SmithFoods’ corporate HR function with a particular focus on talent, processes, and culture.  This position has six direct reports: HR Managers at three manufacturing sites, Talent and Benefits, Payroll, and EH&S.  The role sits on the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and requires significant cross-functional collaboration to ensure the team is working in alignment with the priorities and objectives of the company.  Additionally, the role supports the Compensation, Talent, and Culture Committee of the Company’s board of directors.

Department Duties

  • Develop the talent and performance of the function through effective coaching, hiring, and performance management
  • Foster company culture by developing and refining effective listening tools and corporate action plans
  • Participate in the definition of and lead the execution against the Company’s business strategy as it relates to human resources, including supporting revenue growth and margin improvements
  • Design and execute a multi-year human resource roadmap that aligns with company strategy and addresses opportunities for continuous process improvement, and advancement of functional capabilities and technologies
  • Develop and maintain tools, systems, and training to improve the business’ ability to attract, develop and retain talented associates 
  • Streamline and ensure consistent execution of HR business processes around the company / locations and maintain effective feedback mechanisms for continuous process improvement 
  • Contribute to the development of annual budgets, forecasts, performance goals by site, and associated capital expenditure plans and priorities
  • Ensure effective prioritization and execution across the function through KPIs
  • Facilitate both engagement and compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies, local city government, and key community organizations
  • Supervise collective bargaining activities at various Company sites including but not limited to contract negotiations, grievances, compliance, and union relations

  • Understand and execute the principles of the Company’s Operational Excellence program driving the right behaviors, standards, and continuous improvement across all operating entities
  • Participate in cross-functional teams as required to advance the business interests of the company
  • Compliance with all company and regulatory policies/guidelines relating to associate safety, food safety, and food quality

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Provide leadership to all direct reports and ensure appropriate leadership and hands-on engagement with indirect reports 
  • Strengthen local team through coaching, training, and effective goal setting
  • Support cross-functional and site leaders through regular engagement
  • Other duties as assigned

Work Environment

  • Office environment with visitation to manufacturing operations and warehouses

Physical Demands

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Monday through Friday, minimum 45 hours per week
  • Additional hours and days (holidays/weekends) as required to meet workload  

Travel

  • Travel as needed estimated at 20% to support Company activities in all locations OH, IN, and MO

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience and a demonstrated track record of accomplishments in Human Resources leadership
  • Track record of continuous improvement across multiple sites and cross-functional teams
  • Track record of talent and organizational development

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in Business or applicable field (i.e. MBA, Ph.D.) 
  • Professional certification preferred (PHR or SPHR)
