Position elimination: how much notice to employee

We have been given  a directive to rework our business model and it will require eliminating 1 position.  How much notice is  required to give the employee.  Our plan was to give them a 30 day notice and  allow them to post for another position in our location.

Thanks so much for your help!

  • My practice has always been to give at least two weeks' notice for a position elimination  for a full time employee and at least one weeks' notice for position elimination for a temporary employee.

  • I agree that 30 days is fine. We had to eliminate a whole department once bur since it was 15 people we started at 3 months out so they could post for other position openings in the company. In the end we only terminated 2 employees.

  • Agree - more notice is better - allows people to plan and feel like they have some control.
