New Mandatory Paid Sick Leave in Michigan

(This question came to me anonymously from an HR practitioner. - Steve)

I wanted to ask those who have facilities in Michigan if they have any insight on the new mandatory sick leave law, how they are proceeding.

Our biggest avenue is we don’t have the amount of PTO/Sick Time in our current policy and the additional cost per employee is costly.

I’ve heard it could shut down many companies based on the requirements and it tends to be changing back and force between the political parties.

I'd really appreciate any insight or feedback that people have on this.

  • The Act states:

    (7) As used in this section:

    (b) “Paid leave” includes, but is not limited to, paid vacation days, paid personal days, and paid time off.

So, if your company already provides employees with 40 hours or more of paid vacation time in a year, you may already be in compliance with the new act as long as you allow your employees to call in sick for themselves or a family member and use vacation time for these purposes.  You may need to modify your vacation time policy slightly if you require advance notification and revise to allow your employees to call and use vacation time at a moment's notice for illness.

    Kind Regards,

    Dave
